A topic describes what the paper is about. A thesis statement makes a claim about that topic that the rest of the paper has to defend. Write the thesis statement first, and test every paragraph against it: if a paragraph does not support the thesis, it does not belong in the paper.
Where an essay can rely partly on reasoned argument, a research paper needs to show its evidence directly, with data, studies, and primary sources cited in the text rather than just listed in the references. Qatar University research methods courses usually specify how many peer-reviewed sources are required, and markers check this closely.
A clear structure signals a clear argument: an introduction with the thesis, body paragraphs that each make one point supported by evidence, and a conclusion that restates the argument in light of what was shown rather than repeating the introduction word for word.
Grammar mistakes are the easiest thing to fix and the least likely to fail a paper on their own. A paper is far more likely to lose marks for an argument that drifts, evidence that does not connect back to the thesis, or a conclusion that introduces a new idea instead of closing the existing one.
